When the Worries Won't Stop: A South African Christian's Honest Guide to Anxiety and the Bible

The Scene

It is 3am on a Tuesday in Sandton. The Christian is awake. The mind is doing what the mind does when anxiety takes hold. The prayers are not working. The breathing is shallow.

Philippians 4:6-7 — *"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."*

The South African Christian in the situations described above is not alone. The Bible has been speaking to these situations for two thousand years. The Wednesday Bible study in Parkmore has been hearing these passages read, discussed, and applied for ten years. What follows is a distillation of what the Bible says and what we have learned from the journey.

The Honest Confession

The first honest step with anxiety is to confess it honestly. The Bible does not say that the Christian who struggles with anxiety has failed spiritually. The Bible does not say that the Christian who takes medication for anxiety is lacking in faith. The Bible says: bring every anxious thought to God.

What the Bible Says About Anxiety

Philippians 4:6 says: 'Do not be anxious about anything.' The word 'anything' covers the mortgage, the medical results, the child's report card, the traffic on William Nicol, the petrol price, the load-shedding schedule. The antidote to anxiety is not trying harder. The antidote is prayer.

Anxiety and the Body

The Bible also acknowledges that anxiety is physical. It affects sleep, appetite, digestion, and heart rate. The Bible and the medical professional are not enemies. The Bible invites us to use every good gift God has given, including modern medicine and professional mental health support.

Practical Steps for the Anxious Christian in Johannesburg

After ten years of Wednesday Bible study in Parkmore, we have learned that the anxious Christian benefits from: naming the worry, separating controllable from uncontrollable, fixing the body, telling someone, praying the worry to God every single day.

A Word to the Christian Who Feels Guilty

Some Christians feel that their anxiety is a sign of weak faith. The Bible says clearly: bring your anxiety to God. The guilt about anxiety is often more damaging than the anxiety itself.

A Prayer for the Anxious Christian

Father, you know the anxiety we carry. We bring our anxiety to you now. We lay down the burden of trying to be perfectly calm. We receive your peace. Guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

A Closing Prayer

Father, we bring this struggle to you. We ask for your wisdom, your strength, and your presence. We ask for the community to hold us. We ask for the hope that does not disappoint. Amen.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
