Showing Up to the Online Bible Study: A South African's Guide to the Small Discipline of the Wednesday Night

The Scene

It is Wednesday evening in Fourways. The email has been sent: Wednesday Bible study, 7:30pm, Google Meet link attached. The Christian is tired. The day was long. The couch is right there.

Romans 5:3-4 — *"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."*

The South African Christian in the situations described above is not alone. The Bible has been speaking to these situations for two thousand years. The Wednesday Bible study in Parkmore has been hearing these passages read, discussed, and applied for ten years. What follows is a distillation of what the Bible says and what we have learned from the journey.

Why Showing Up Is the Hardest Part

The online Bible study is uniquely vulnerable to non-attendance. There is no parking lot to walk through. There is no face to greet. The online Bible study removes every excuse except the one that matters: I chose not to come.

What the Bible Says About Discipline

Hebrews 6:1 says: 'Let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity.' The word 'maturity' implies growth. Growth implies regularity. 1 Corinthians 9:27 says Paul disciplined his body 'like a runner competing in a race.'

Five Practical Habits for the Online Bible Study

Put the Bible study in the calendar as a recurring appointment. Prepare something small the night before. Have a fallback plan for the Wi-Fi. Find an accountability partner. Accept that some weeks you will only listen with half an ear, and that still counts.

Why the Small Showing Up Matters

After ten years of running a Wednesday Bible study in Parkmore, we have learned that the Christians who grow most are the Christians who show up most. The showing up is itself the spiritual discipline. The Wednesday evening, every Wednesday evening, is the practice. And the practice shapes the soul.

A Prayer Before the Wednesday Night

Father, we confess that we are tired. We confess that we have often chosen comfort over showing up. Give us the small grace to open the laptop, click the link, and be present. Use the Bible study to shape us. Amen.

A Closing Prayer

Father, we bring this struggle to you. We ask for your wisdom, your strength, and your presence. We ask for the community to hold us. We ask for the hope that does not disappoint. Amen.

I attended my first Sunday picnic with my family. The vibe was warm without being overwhelming. The kids ran around Mushroom Farm Park, the adults talked, and someone brought extra blankets for the cool afternoon.

The Korean class has become our family Sunday ritual. My wife and I take the class, the kids play. It is the only Sunday we look forward to in the month.
